WINGSHOOTING SAFARI

Namibia Wingshooting

Chosen by many of our clients as a complimentary experience to their African hunting safari, this adrenaline charged and fun activity lands you scores of trophies in a single day. With the bird hunting season open from May through November, some of the best times to hunt are from September to November.

Wing shooting is normally overlooked in Namibia when confronted with the excellent Trophy game hunting for which the country is more well-known. Of the 20 different huntable game species, some of the most popular to hunt are Burchell’s Sandgrouse, Namaqua Sandgrouse, Red Billed Spur fowl, Helmeted Guinea fowl, Rock Pigeon, Cape Turtle Dove, and Mourning Dove.

Doves surely challenge sandgrouse in agility and swiftness, descending at the waters in large numbers, taunting you with their three note cries work HARD–er, work HARD–er! We hunt these sporting birds in ambush over waterholes.

Helmeted Guinea fowl, the most widespread upland game bird and Francolin is hunted walked-up, flushing them in the dry river beds and open grassland areas.

Quail the smallest of the game birds are nomadic and migratory; a driven hunt flushing them in open grassland areas, quail inhabit the same terrain as Guinea fowl and Francolin; their numbers largely depend on the Namibian rain season.
  • HUNTING AREA:

Here in Namibia you can set your clock by the arrival of the sand grouse; Namaqua in the early morning and Double-banded at sunset, hovering above and then dropping to the water like stones from the sky. Tracking their fluttery flight path with shotgun is a mastered skill, sand grouse shooting is “measured in minutes rather than hours”. It is the sandgrouse that is the most popular.

Of all the species of Sandgrouse, Burchells, or Pterocles burchelli, abound in the area while the Namaqua, Pterocles namaqua, are much less prevalent. Sandgrouse are misnamed, as they are not a true grouse, but half way between a grouse and a pigeon. They do however possess the feathered feet and parts of the legs that true grouse have. These wonderful little birds are magnificently adapted to their desert environment, having absorbent breast feathers with which they soak up moisture while drinking, and then carry the resultant water payload back to their nests.

The Namaqua in particular, are a very handsome bird, easily identified even in flight, due to the pointed tail feathers. There is no doubt, the man that has one well mounted for his trophy room will own a beautiful piece of bragging rights.

Still, these wonderful little birds, [which are also incredibly good eating] by virtue of their predictable bi-daily drinking regimen, can be extremely vulnerable to over hunting. Several methods of decreasing the danger of over hunting are utilized while further methods are under consideration. Schalk Pienaar Safaris Namibia is determined to leading the charge in Namibia when it comes to initiating these conservation procedures.

Education of shooters before they are in the field is our first initiative. All shooters have it explained to them to aim for the single or double birds and not simply spray the center of the flock. Skilled shot gunners make this their prerogative. It is after all a gentleman’s pastime, to have a pleasant day’s sport, and not an exercise in competitive one-upmanship as to who can kill the most birds.

  • HEALTH/CLIMATE

Temperatures increase by about 6°C for every 1,000m you descend (or 3.5°F per 1,000ft). As a result, Namibia's parks are hotter, especially those located in the desert. Rainfall is higher in the far north, including Etosha and the Zambezi Region (Caprivi Strip). Further south the climate is hotter and drier.
